Santa Maria Novella is a church in Florence, Italy. It is the first great basilica in Florence it is the city's principal Dominican church. This church was called S. Maria Novella because it was built on the site of a 9th-century oratory of Santa Maria delle Vigne. It was in 1221 that the Dominican Order took over the care of the church. It was completed and consecrated in 1420.
